Where do I start when introducing you to my third graders? This sweet group is ready! They are eager learners, they are careful problem-solvers and they are willing to dig deep. Each and every child in this class is very caring. They have bonded and created a classroom culture that is a family. Encouraging comments naturally escape their mouths throughout every part of our day.
These students come from a variety of backgrounds, but come together each day to explore, discover, ask, imagine, create, and, most of all...think!
My third graders come from a diverse array of settings. Some are fortunate enough to live right on our beautiful lake surrounded by views. Others live in a motel downtown and are technically classified as "homeless." Once they enter the doors of our school, those differences disappear. Poverty disappears when they cross the threshold. There are no unsafe situations. There are no negative thoughts or experiences. Once those precious gems walk through our doors, they are on an even playing field. Every student is expected to achieve, collaborate, inquire, discover, and create.
My Project
We need to expand our nonfiction section of our classroom library. My students participate in a daily Reader's Workshop as well as a daily Writer's Workshop. These workshop times provide an opportunity for third graders to grow as passionate and capable readers and writers, while allowing them personal choice and ownership of their learning.
I believe that educated people are the key to the change we need in this world, and that powerful nonfiction text can enlighten and empower young learners to be that change.
I have carefully selected high-interest, relevant nonfiction books in a variety of levels and topics. Many of the choices on this list were selected by students themselves, students who are eager to learn more about the world around them. When these students (who currently have limited exposure to the diversity of the world around them) are given the opportunity to dive into a wide variety of nonfiction, their thinking will be changed. My hope is that they will do something positive and productive with those changes.
Students will also be using these nonfiction books as powerful mentor texts, allowing published authors to "enter our classroom" and "teach" through their professional writing. Students are then immersed in good writing because they have read it, and can emulate it in their own writing.
