This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
An old building in an urban city is what my students call their school. It provides an amazing outlet for them in terms of social justice and advocacy. My students suffer without AC; it would be nice to work on projects in a bright, comfy space. It is their home away from home. They need your help.
They are middle school students with great potential.
Their school is an old building without AC and running lead-free water (they have deer park fountains). They come from broken families and a dangerous neighborhood. My goal as an educator is to provide them with a classroom that is engaging, safe, inspiring, inquisitive, and full of character. My students teach me new things everyday. I just want to give back to them, school shouldn't feel or look like jail!
My Project
I am requesting flooring, seating, an aquarium, a printer, and graphing boards for the initial class set-up and upcoming Expeditionary Learning project. My students will have a creative corner where they can work on their expeditions. These projects include student-led conferences, portfolios, and exhibits. The area will be set up in front of a dry-erase board where they can write action plans and do demos. This relaxing space will encourage collaboration, peer talk, and higher order thinking. They need a space to call their own, to be proud of.
The students will have the opportunity to host gallery walks and display student work in front of a staff panel.
Presentations of their work will occur on a regular basis. These are the students that have fallen between the cracks and need extra instruction to be on grade level. I will integrate science, math, and the arts in their instruction. Although they are in middle school, they enjoy sitting on the floor, sharing ideas, and having instruction centered around their needs and learning styles.
