Currently, the teachers at Ulloa Elementary School have been assigned the task of designing a grade level "challenge bin." My 4th grade team and I want this bin to be accessible and hands-on. It is for students ready to go the extra mile after completing their regular assigned work. Most of this challenge curriculum is project-based. A challenge all teachers face is how to balance the different levels of learning abilities in our classes. Often times, we worry about the ones falling behind more than the ones who "get it". At Ulloa, we are setting the goal of pushing our students past the proficient level and attaining advanced academic standing. To help with this, we are creating a self- explanatory project box so that students who need the challenge have the opportunity to show their strengths. Many of these projects involve reteaching ideas previously learned so that the finished product can benefit the whole class as well as extend the meaning to the child completing it. To help with the organization of this project we would love for each student to be able to compile their work in a portfolio. We hope to make a portfolio for all of them, even if some of them may only get to one project. We would love to have plastic accordion portfolios donated! This would help students develop organizational skills as well as pride in preserving their work. It is my job to serve all the needs of my students. I see this challenge bin and portfolio as a great resource for many students. Each child needs to be able to shine in their own way.
