This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine creating a work of art, stepping back to view it and saying to yourself, "Wow! I can't believe that I did that!" What an ego boost art is!
I teach art at a high poverty school.
Our student body is composed of everything from severe/profound special education students to gifted and talented students, and everything in between. My class is often the only art class my students take their entire lives. I try to make it as special as possible.
My Project
For the past 13 years, I have hosted an event at my school called Chalkfest. Chalkfest is a day in the spring when 50-60 students spend the day recreating masterpieces of art on the concrete in front of the main building. For the art kids at my school, Chalkfest is considered their Christmas! My art program's funding is not what it used to be. I am often not even able to purchase all the necessary art supplies for my classroom, so anything extra will most likely not come about unless we receive financial aid. The materials I am requesting are chalk pastels, white chalk, and black charcoal. The chalk and black charcoal will be used to recreate the beautiful artwork on the sidewalk.
The benefits of Chalkfest are much more than just making pretty pictures.
Whether the students are carefully noting the details of a piece of artwork, or shading their chalk drawing, they are actively engaged, learning, collaborating, and having fun. Students learn about and practice teamwork. They are inspired by the art that they are recreating. Each group's leader carries out leadership skills and techniques. Your help on this project will ensure that the tradition of Chalkfest continues!
