Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My diverse classroom is composed primarily of English Language Learners in a high poverty area. My students come from different academic, linguistic, and sociocultural backgrounds. They are eager learners who need time, understanding, and a friendly environment that gives them the security and opportunity to discover themselves and their world.
Most of my students start 2nd Grade without knowing how to read or write.
Our school does not have a library, so it is in the classroom that students have the opportunity to read and listen to stories, to learn about their world and to discover how much they can do for the future.
My Project
We have new computer software for math and reading, but the chairs we have been using for computer time we borrowed from another classroom. Technology is a very effective tool in a classroom with so many students who work below grade level and whose first language is not English. In order to differentiate instruction, computers allow students to work on their level in reading and in math.
Unfortunately, we will have to return the chairs we borrowed from 5th grade and we will have no seats for our classroom computers.
Computers give students the boost they need to practice in the areas they struggle in a fun and meaningful way. However, without comfortable seats students will not experience learning from the computers the way all children should.
Most of my students do not have computers or internet at home, so school is the only opportunity they have to be exposed to this kind of technology. Please help me to offer to these students an equal and fair learning environment!
