Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th grade English language arts students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language.
You wouldn't know it from looking at them, but many have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their young lives.
After school, most either go home to babysit younger siblings at home or attend after-school care until 5 or 6. For young teens, this high amount of responsibility at home can sometimes result in extra exuberance while at school. Although some of them forget to focus on academics, most of our students are terrific, goal-setting scholars who will be the first in their families to attend college.
My Project
It's taken us two years, but we are finally very close to having a refurnished classroom with flexible seating. This year's class of middle school students have spoken: Although they appreciate having the different choices available (some of them love the yoga balls and wobble stools), what they like best is good, old-fashioned chairs! With that in mind, I would like to get four more chairs for our classroom, so we aren't always shuffling furniture around at the beginning of classes. Everyone learns better when they're relaxed and comfortable. My students and I would really appreciate your help with getting these chairs!
