Our morning routine is to start with a joke-of-the-day. Many students are turned off by science because they're intimidated by the content, and they have a difficult time relating it to their lives. My goal is to create an open and inviting environment where all students feel like they can be scientists.
My students are from the South Bronx.
Because of the issues my students face on an everyday basis, many of my students have interest fields that serve others. Because of this, I've created an Investigative Biology course which allows students to dive into the role of scientists and medical professionals. This allows students to use science to fuel their interest in social and biological issues that directly affect their lives.
This project is for enough chair bands for my class and for enough chair covers to cover all of the chairs and desks in my classroom. The chair bands will provide an outlet for wiggling around without distracting other students, and the chair covers will allow my students to move their chairs and tables without distracting others.
Many of my students have a difficult time sitting still.
Students like to move desks and chairs to get out their energy and to get comfortable. In addition, pencil sharpening and bathroom breaks cause loud noises of desks and chairs moving as students get up and down. The chair and desk covers will allow students to wiggle and get in and out of their seats without distracting the whole class. In addition, the chair bands will help students who need to move around while doing work do that without being a distraction to their peers.
