Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the greatest group of five and six year-olds. With high energy levels and enthusiasm, my class always comes to school so eager to learn. My class is very diverse with some families being more fortunate than others.
The twenty-five students in my class have varying walks of life, but together, we have created one community.
Kindergarten is often my students' first year of school. It is so crucial to build their excitement toward learning and encourage them to achieve great things in the classroom.
My Project
Building financial literacy can begin as young as even kindergarten. Many teachers today are already teaching basic building blocks on this topic. In my classroom, I would love to incorporate a grocery store into my dramatic play area in order to help set a foundation for financial literacy. Having these pretend play grocery items will help solidify topics such as needs and wants as well as money. Having a grocery store in my classroom will give my students an engaging and real-world connection component that they are already familiar with. Using pretend food and shopping items, my students will be able to shop while engaging in discussion on needs vs. wants as well as spending and saving money while shopping for every day groceries. All students have some personal experience with going to the grocery store with their family. Incorporating pretend play food and shopping items into the classroom will empower my students to learn to make the best choices possible in a real world situation.
