Ceramics in the Village!

My students need a kiln so we can create and fire 3D clay projects. Children love working with their hands and this would be a wonderful way to introduce them to a new medium.

My Students

My students come from a varied background, many from military families and some that have never taken art before. We are fortunate to have art as a resource and be able to expose these children to all that art offers. We have many new students this year that came from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Art is a wonderful outlet to help keep their minds off the damage and a great way for them to express their feelings.

The art room is a place they can explore, learn, and create.

The children learn various techniques such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and 3D work, experiment with different mediums, incorporate different styles, and explore art history. I hope they leave my room inspired and eager to create more art!

My Project

A kiln would be a wonderful addition to our school. The children would be able to sculpt, mold and create 3D clay pieces. They would learn about the multiple steps to ceramics from clay to greenware to bisque to glaze firing.

Ceramics would allow the children to learn to work with a different material, carve, create a relief, learn how to attach clay pieces together and experiment with glazes.

The finished piece would be food and drink safe so the end result can also be used and not just displayed.

The kiln would allow children another opportunity to be creative in the art room and work with their hands in a different way.
