This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a continuation high school, and so my students are considered "at-risk" students that needed an alternative to conventional high schools in order to graduate. But really, so many of my students are underestimated, and just need a different approach to see them through. Some are homeless, some work full-time jobs, some have mental health problems, but they're good people, and I'm proud to work with them toward their goals.

I've seen troubled sophomores with almost no credits grow into fantastic seniors who work very hard and graduate early.

I've had students work tirelessly to make up for mistakes they made when they were freshmen. I've had students tell me the first day of class, "I can't draw." And then leave my class loving art. I love my job and my students.

My Project

Wheel throwing is one of the best art mediums for stress. It's physical, therapeutic, and a bit fun. I would love to bring that feeling to my classroom. This wheel would be an amazing thing to have my students try.

This is a stressful time for everyone, and an art form that is fun and new would be just what my students need.

I teach handbuilding ceramics in my class already, and have lots of students who love clay, and would jump at the chance to try wheel throwing. This wheel would be an amazing tool for their art making.
