My Students
My students are amazing, diverse, creative, and hungry to learn. They come from all walks of life to throughout the Detroit metro area to receive an education at our high school. In addition to being highest need, we have a large LGBTQ community. My school offers performance and visual art every day to help our students grow creatively and emotionally. As a result of this, our students, who would be outcasts at a traditional public school, thrive and feel at home.
My Project
Sgraffito means "to scratch" in Italian. It is a ceramic technique that has been used by various cultures the world over. Using the sgraffito tools, students will also be able to carve designs into It will also allow me to teach students about ceramic artwork created by different cultures over different periods of time. Slump and drape molds will allow students to create beautiful functional pieces such as plates and bowls.
This school year, we have encouraged our ceramic arts students to get creative and begin using underglazes to create beautifully carved coil and slab vessels. Sgraffito tools and new underglazes will allow students to develop their skills further and create more intricately designed pieces of ceramic artwork.
