Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Centers, centers.....read all about it!!! Literacy centers have many benefits for both students and teachers. However, the students in my classroom have yet to discover these many benefits. Wanting to start centers this school year, I'm faced with a dilemma: I have no centers!
My language arts class is full of kindergarten and first grade students.
They are very eager to learn and they love the challenge of thinking. They attend the charter school where I teach. At our school, we balance our literacy program between the whole language approach and direct phonics instruction. Our most important goal for each student is for them to develop THE LOVE FOR LEARNING! We develop our own curriculum based on the strengths and needs we see in our students. We help each student learn at their own level and pace, yet we continue to challenge them every single day.
My Project
With center-based instruction, I will be able to have some students working independently or in small groups while spending time on small group instruction. This will allow me to multi-task more efficiently and gear activities to students’ specific learning needs. I will be able to focus on different reading levels while students are working in centers such as learning sight words, short and long vowels, beginning and ending sounds. Having centers will also allow me to provide choices for my students and make their learning relevant, personal, and engaging.
My project is very important because it benefits every single individual in my classroom.
Each student will be able to receive instruction at their level and will be able enjoy their activity of choice. Offering choices to my students will help them become responsible, independent learners. At the same time, they will be reinforcing skills that will take them hand in hand towards the path of literacy.
