Hello! This is my first year teaching and will be working with 14-16 kindergarten students in a rural, Montana school this coming August. Although the district has many low-income students, the community truly cares for these children and the potential each one of them has.
These kindergartners are about to embark on an adventure unlike any other: they will learn how to safely hold scissors, form a sentence that will later become a paragraph, discover all the possibilities that hide between the pages of a book, and will learn, not only about individual numbers but about how numbers can be manipulated to make sense of the world around them.
Essentially, they will be learning the foundation of the skills they will need moving forward and I am so excited to cultivate the learning that can take place in a kindergarten classroom.
My Project
Centers are an important part of any kindergarten classroom. The main benefit of centers in the classroom is the development of social skills while maximizing hands-on learning. Whether doing work independently or with a partner, students are building self-efficacy and an understanding of important concepts including letter recognition, number sense, early writing skills, data representation and so much more.
I would like to include more hands-on, game-based activities in my centers to increase memory capacity, strategic thinking, and a deeper understanding of the concepts mentioned above.
I am a first-year teacher and really want my students to have fun while learning but do not have many resources of my own at this time. Kindergarten is the first step to a lifelong journey of acquiring new skills and knowledge and I want my kindergartners to know that it can be fun! Both math and literacy centers will be a huge part of my classroom and I know that these resources will keep students engaged all year long. Most of the materials include task cards that I will put in labeled storage containers at each station. They will be allowed to choose which task card they would like to complete to encourage them to stay on task and remain engaged during the center. The other materials will be used for different centers including a listening center and a sentence building center where I will give them game-like tasks to complete.
*I have included a picture of my planning process during the summer and will add pictures of my classroom and my students when the school year begins!
