I teach kindergarten in an inner urban school in Washington. Many of our students receive free-reduced lunch and come from a low socio-economic family background. Even with all the struggles their families may face, the students come to school eager and excited to learn. This is my first year teaching kindergarten and I am always looking for ways to make it a memorable, fun, and an engaging experience for all my students.
Literacy is a primary focus in my classroom because it sets the foundation for students’ future education. With the wide range of learners in my classroom I need materials that support each student's different learning needs that will be fun and engaging to all my kindergarten students.
During my literacy time I work with small groups, focusing on each students different needs and prepare fun centers for the rest of the students to guide them further with their reading and writing skills. To make the centers successful they need to be fun, engaging, and challenging. Since this is my first year teaching kindergarten I am limited on supplies and centers. I have requested 3 literacy centers (magnetic language centers, help yourself language trays, and alphabet sound tubs with rack) that the students could work at independently or with a partner. Each center is hands on, fun, engaging and will push my students to their full potential. These centers will help my students strengthen their skills in phonemic awareness, letter recognition/sounds, vocabulary and writing.
Your gift of literacy centers will help bring more excitement to the classroom and instill a love of reading and writing in all my students. I am very excited to begin using these fun, hands on materials in my classroom!
