Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My teaching philosophy is, "Education is not the filling of pail, but the lighting of a fire," and I revel in being an engaging teacher that meets the needs and helps discover the aptitudes of ALL of my students. I teach 1st grade in a high-need community in a suburban school setting. 65% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My classroom of 20 students includes 11 girls and 9 boys, 3 ELL(English Language Learners) and 3 special needs students.

My class has low parental participation and support. Although I send out weekly newsletters and request support and materials, I usually end of buying materials myself. For example, we just celebrated Johnny Appleseed's birthday and I bought the apples, apple juice, and apple preserves myself (although I requested donations)to culminate our study.

Literacy Centers provide the students a chance to work in groups of 3 to 4 and explore and interact with reading and writing materials. The instant literacy and writing learning centers will motivate and engage the students because of the variety and range of activities that the instant centers provide. Additionally, literacy centers are an invaluable part of instruction because I am able to work with small groups of students and provide additional .

Your help will ensure that ALL students receive individual support and enrichment in the critical subjects of reading and writing.
