I teach at a Pre-K center that serves at-risk children. We spend a lot of time in centers and I want to make sure that I have ample materials in each center that encourage the development of literacy. This proposal is Part 2 of my original proposal and would help facilitate meeting that need in two other centers in my classroom. In this proposal I am wishing to address the dramatic play area and the fine motor manipulative area. In dramatic play I would like to include writing boxes from Lakeshore. This set is made up of 6 different boxes that include the grocery store, toy shop, doctor's office, my home, school days, and restaurant themes. Each boxes contains 40 vocabulary words relating to that theme and write and wipe boards for children to practice writing their grocery list, doctor's prescriptions, toy list, etc. I believe this will encourage greater vocabulary, word recognition, and writing skills. For the manipulative area I would like to place some letter lacing beads both in upper and lower case letters. The children can practice spelling their name, vocabulary words, or putting the ABC's in order while practicing and developing greater hand-eye coordination. I know the children would greatly enjoy and benefit from these materials. At this early age learning should be fun. If children learn to love learning at an early age, future years of schooling will be both more meaningful and more pleasant.
