Centered on Learning in my Special Services Classroom
Help me give my students comfortable, fun bean bag seating options that meet their individual handicap needs while working at centers in our self-contained Special Needs classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a small, rural school in Alabama. All of our students are on a free and reduced lunch program. My students range in age from 10-15 years old. I have 12 students in my self-contained Special Education classroom with a variety of disabilities. Four of these students are multi-handicapped and must stay in their wheelchair for the majority of the day.
Even with their disabilities, these students show up on a daily basis with smiles on their faces.
They truly are the highlight of my day, and they bring joy to everyone they come in contact with throughout the day.
My Project
These bean bags will give my special needs students the option to get out of their wheelchairs and standard classroom desks to work in centers in a fun, comfortable seat that still meets their individual needs or handicap. These bean bags will be placed in our reading center, math center and on our "Fun Friday" activities!
I chose the bean bags because they offer the support my handicap students need.
Once seated, the bags offer stability and comfort for each students' particular handicap, while giving them a fun alternative for seating in the classroom.
When students are comfortable or having fun, they are more likely to let their true personalities shine throughout their learning!
