My Students
My students are 30 bright-eyed, energetic, 6 and 7-year-olds, from the south side of Chicago, who are eager to learn, explore, and have a place to belong. They are full of potential, but need the right tools to realize all of it.
They come from tough circumstances, but every day they come to school smiling and excited about what the day has in store.
Their smiles and perpetual optimism inspire me to work harder, make fewer excuses, and give them the good start they deserve in school.
My Project
In our classroom, students spend two hours of the day in math and literacy centers while I teach small groups.
Students usually say centers are their favorite time of the day, and my goal is always to keep it that way by making the activities fresh and fun!
Our classroom is themed after Pete the Cat, so Pete the Cat books are always the hottest independent reading material in the library. Throughout the year, students will use the puzzles, stamps, and ink pads to practice place value in math and different spelling patterns in literacy. Index cards and clothespins make for an endless variety of sight word games and foam dice do the same for (quiet!) math games. Headphone splitters allow multiple students to listen to books on CD at the same time.
Students will use the comprehension practice cards to independently test their comprehension skills. The small magnetic easel is a way for them to practice spelling patterns with magnetic letters, and the storage caddies help keep all the supplies organized. Hall passes allow students to use the bathroom without interrupting small group instruction, and of course, the pencils are used for just about everything!
Having a variety of supplies and activities like these helps make sure students are never bored when they're working independently. And if they're engaged in what they're doing, that means I can devote my attention to teaching small groups, which is where all the magic happens!
