Celtic Community Garden: A Place for Growing, Learning, and Healing.
My students need two Gronomics Modular Raised Garden beds to start a student-run garden club at our school, as well as the materials such as hoses and a timer to provide irrigation for the vegetables and to start our healing garden.
As a teacher at low-income public high school, I see and hear about different challenges our students face every day. Yet even through all of these challenges, our students are able to rise above the challenges they face and find success.
Our students are very diverse; they have different cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
More than 50% of our students are on free/reduced lunch. I believe that students should be focused on their school work, not where or when they are getting their next meal. I would like to help eliminate one of the challenges for many of our students and create an opportunity for students to feel more connected to our school.
My Project
Just over half of our 2100 students receive free or reduced lunch. Not only will this garden provide food for our students to help meet the most basic of needs, but it will also allow them the opportunity to learn invaluable life skills. Students will walk away knowing how to create and care for their own vegetable gardens.
Students whose basic needs are met and that feel a connection to their school do better.
By creating this garden, and the club that goes with it, students will be able to have healthy, fresh produce at home and will be able to have that connection to our school and feel more like part of our Celtic Family.
In addition to the vegetable garden, we are planning on creating a healing garden. The past two years have been rough on our Celtic family, losing a beloved teacher to cancer, three students for various reasons, as well as several significant personal losses for students at our school. This healing garden would be a place of remembrance and peace to help cope with the losses at our school, as well as personal losses for our students and staff.
