Recently, one of my Hispanic students said she was white. Another Hispanic student answered "Me too!" Uh oh, I thought. No one in our classroom is white. Sixteen of twenty-one students are Hispanic, the other five are African-America. I, their teacher, am Asian. I realize I need to teach my students about their different backgrounds and about multicultural issues so that they will learn to appreciate themselves and one other for their differences and unique traits. I teach in an impoverished neighborhood in the South Bronx of New York City. My students rarely leave the Bronx, let alone travel to other countries. They do not have many books to read at home or opportunities to visit museums and special events with their families. This lack of exposure to different cultures has hindered their understanding of the amazing diversity of human life on the globe. Due to a lack of representation in the media and in our classroom books, the majority of my students have limited opportunities to learn about their own Hispanic cultures as well. In order to help my students learn about who they are and about different cultures, I want to work on multicultural art projects with the students and provide them with books and images depicting different people in the world. Please help me purchase art supplies such as multicultural skin tone crayons, a different people activity pack, a Hispanic book set, and a set of books and photographs of children from around the world. This will help kick off what I expect will be a yearlong unit on learning to appreciate different people and ourselves.
