Celebrating Social Activists Through Art

Help me give my students the specific materials needed to create gorgeous large scale papier-mache sculptures inspired by traditional pottery forms.

My Students

My middle school art students independently choose this class as an elective which is a testament to their commitment to learning about their personal creativity and art making. They are innately curious about different art concepts and approaches especially in how it relates to their world. They are students who are invested in learning new ways of seeing and taking risks. I continue to be impressed with their curiosity and ways they connect their personal experiences and express those experiences through their artwork.

My Project

These art materials will provide an opportunity for my students to learn how to build a large scale 3D form based on traditional pottery. Students will create this project in school, using recycled plastic bottles as an armature, newspaper to build the form, foil and tape to hold the shape, and papier-mâché. The papier-mâché will be painted and collaged. Each student’s artwork will pay homage to one important social activist in music, writing, politics, and/ or art. Students will learn about contemporary artist Roberto Lugo and how his artwork addresses these ideas.
