Celebrating Our Differences In A Diverse World!

My students need a cover with a bluetooth keyboard for our iPad to research civil rights and diversity and an HP color printer and ink to publish our Diversity Journals.

My Students

President John Kennedy said, "In giving rights to others which belong to them, we give rights to ourselves and to our country." What a great foundation on which to build a study of diversity and civil rights! It is critical, at this point in history, to remind students of how far we've come.

My 5th grade students are remarkable!

They are eager to learn and to experience new things. They are also very accepting and inclusive of others. They love technology! Unfortunately, poverty and unemployment rates are sky high, and our students feel the pressure from peers, even at home. When they are faced with hard times at home, they are more prone to be critical and react negatively with their peers. It becomes very easy to exploit someone else's differences or preferences to deflect attention from themselves. I see my students wanting to be successful, but situations in our world today cause hardships on families, especially in rural areas. With appropriate information and guidance in school, they will learn ways to deal with their differences appropriately. Our unemployment rate is far above the national average, and around 70% of our students, school-wide, are on free or reduced price lunch. Most of my students have no access to computer technology or the Internet at home.

My Project

These materials will allow my amazing students to learn about diversity, civil rights, and cultural differences. The keyboard cover for our iPad will make more easily used by my students with special needs as we do research and access endless digital resources to support our Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. We will be able to record video growth journals so my students can express thoughts and feelings they may face while studying about our nation's past experiences with civil rights and integration of diverse cultures and abilities. We will also write and publish Diversity Journals with the help of the HP printer and ink. Helping young people embrace their uniqueness, as well as the differences they see in others, will be a vital life skill. The world in which they are living is nothing if not diverse. My hope is to lead them to be mindful of struggles and celebrate differences. That is the change we want to see in the world.

Your valued support for this project would help my students embrace individuality and one another's differences in school and in life!

Being able to use the keyboard for the iPad will give the students an experience in hands-on learning and technology. Most importantly, the HP printer and ink will help tie in the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative that we are implementing. It will be invaluable for publishing our Diversity Journals. Please help us to make this project a reality for the students.
