My students need a variety of 50+ holiday and thematic books that are on their comprehension level in order to understand and appreciate holidays and themes.
Holidays are celebrated throughout the world, and in the United States we have a diverse, rich culture of holidays and traditions! To really appreciate and understand the history and culture behind the holidays students are celebrating, we need a class set of holiday books my students can comprehend.
I have a creative, inquisitive group of bright young minds!
My students love to celebrate and explore the different holidays that we have here in the United States, and all over the world! However, many of the books in our school library are not on my students' comprehension level. The books that are holiday related are usually several decades old, and on a 3rd or 4th grade reading level. When I have no other choice but to read these books to my students, all of the information is hard for them to understand, and they become more confused and distant. Students are not able to fully appreciate the diversity of the holiday or theme we are studying or understand why we are celebrating these holidays in the first place! My students have a great deal of passion for reading, and I am sure with grade appropriate holiday and thematic books, my students will be asking more and more questions about the traditions and holidays that we are studying!
My Project
I am hoping to receive an entire set of holiday books and thematic books that my students will be able to read and understand. These books range from Johnny Appleseed whom we study at the beginning of the year, to Mother's Day which falls during the last few weeks of school! These books will not only explain the origins of important holidays, but also how these holidays are celebrated. To go along with the holiday books, I have asked for a collection of books that relate to themes we teach in first grade, such as pumpkins, seasons, and other fun themes! These books will be placed in my reading center. Students will fill out reading response sheets on these books, and can tell me what they have truly learned about the theme or holiday. It is crucial for students to learn at an early age how to appreciate our culture and holidays.
Donors, with your help I will be putting educational holiday books in the hands of readers who are curious about the different holidays that are celebrated around the world.
Students are also especially interested in learning about the holidays they celebrate in the United States, and why we are celebrating! Please consider making a donation to this wonderful cause!
