I have the privilege to teach and amazing group of students who range in ages 3-5 years old. I have some students on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and some who are typically developing. Some of the disabilities in my classroom include: Speech Language Impairment, Down syndrome, Autism, Developmentally Delayed and typically developing peers. My students enjoy learning new things and are very curious about their environment.
"Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write, and count; childhood is a small window of time to learn and development at the pace which is right for each individual child." Each student will learn at their own pace regardless of disability.
Some of my students may not learn as quickly as other preschoolers, but I feel it is important to give them the opportunity to explore their surroundings, and to give them praise and encouragement to do their best!
My Project
The materials selected will help my students to explore and celebrate diversity. We will use the Multicultural World library, Multicultural Board Book Collection, and Around the World Viewers to design age-appropriate lesson plan to encourage diversity and teach students acceptance of all. We will use the Differing Abilities Puzzles Set to help students understand that persons with disabilities are a part of our community and school. Finally, we will use the Feels Real Baby Dolls to show diversity among babies and talk about difference and similarities among each student in the classroom. These items are a great way to introduce diversity into out classroom.
Learning about diversity in preschool is the first step to helping our future generation of students to have a better understand of tolerance and acceptance, regardless of who an individual is.
Preschool is the foundation of education. We need to educate our young children in a positive way about the differences and similarities regarding the people around us.
