Celebrating Diversity to Raise Empathy through Multicultural Books
My students need books that celebrate diversity and promote social justice as well as those that teach about diverse influential people in history who have made an impact in the world.
My class belongs to public school in a suburb of San Francisco. It is full of hard-working, motivated, kind, and respectful children. They enjoy learning about the world around them through books and online resources. They also especially love to read!
I have a class full of learners who are becoming critical thinkers motivated to make the world a better place.
My school serves a range of diverse students, so within my class, we seek opportunities to celebrate the differences between us! However, my kids often come to school with questions about people they see beyond the walls of our school and don't know how to make sense of them. For example, one student asked about homelessness in San Francisco after visiting the city over the weekend. This question inspired so many more from other children in the class. I realized in this moment how important this matter was to them and how they were already, at the ages of 7 and 8, seeking ways to make a change in the world. These are the kinds of critical thinkers and problem solvers I work with every day!
My Project
With these new books, my students will be exposed to a more diverse representation of the history of our world than the average text book currently portrays. My students will better understand how society has come to be what it is today and will also learn about some individuals who have shaped the world as we know it. These books will help my students develop connections from their own lives to important inventions of yesterday. These stories will inspire my students to develop a passion for learning about diversity and social justice. Stories of everyday heroes raise empathy for others, encourage critical thinking, and inspire children to act with compassion. These books will be the center of our social studies curriculum for the year, which is integrated with both our writing and arts curriculum as well. They would be an incredible addition to enhance our multicultural library in class!
