This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at Mcnair Middle are fourteen going on forty-four. They are babes trying to blossom into mature adult learners. Aware of world changes but yet unsure of their place in the world, they are anxious to prepare themselves for whatever their futures may hold - traveling, making a new friend, learning a new way of communicating, exploring beyond their neighborhoods. Not always confident but most times competent, McNair students are ready for the challenge of learning about other cultures and about tackling a new language.
My Project
My students are hungry for language learning. Within the seven year absence of a language teacher, I have overheard many students asking about opportunities to learn a foreign tongue.
This year, I committed to facilitating a weekly Spanish class using personal knowledge, Mango languages, and native student speakers.
We meet Fridays during an extended learning time. Students are encouraged to use Chromebooks Monday through Thursday as a self-paced learning opportunity, and as reinforcement for new vocabulary learned on Fridays. Participants are encouraged to search the web for resources that can be shared with classmates. They feel empowered. We all learn together as we embrace the diversity within our school community!
