My Students
My students are middle schoolers at a K-8 school in Redwood City. They are creative, hard-working and come from all walks of life. They love learning and their enthusiasm for education is inspiring to see. Since my students are becoming teenagers it is really exciting to see how they embrace their individuality, but also how they are fearless in the face of adversity. They want to stand up for what they believe in. They want to have their voices heard against racism, sexism and prejudice. They want to make a difference. Please help them recognize the power they have to lead this next generation!
My Project
In the month of October my students will be learning about the importance of celebrating and understanding diversity. The big activity I want to do during this time is making a privilege bead bracelet, an activity where students are asked to reflect on their lives and learn to better empathize with their classmates.
“We are all different, which is great because we are all unique.
Without diversity life would be very boring.”
In the privilege bead activity, students will silently reflect on different questions, taking a bead every time the situation applies to their life. After the activity we will be able to discuss and share our thoughts about the activity. Students will learn how everyone brings different baggage and experiences to our classroom and that our differences are beautiful. As we are still in the beginning of the year I think building this strong classroom community is essential!
