My students are rural students. There are a lot of farms and factories in our community. We are about half an hour from the metro and we do not have a shopping center, except for Wal Mart, in which to obtain materials for artful and creative projects.
My students need to be introduced to worlds outside of their town.
I want my students to be well-rounded and educated individuals so they know to strive for great things and to reach for the stars. I want them to know about all of the careers that are outside the town.
I want students to expand their creative side and have the resources to be successful. I want the students to embrace independent learning.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will enhance students' learning and awareness of other cultures. Students will see themselves on the covers of these books and feel that they are welcomed and that there is a place for them in the world.
We will read The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo and do diversity exercises so that we are racially and culturally sensitive to other people.
We will read The Prince and the Dressmaker to make students who are in the LGBTQ community feel that they also have a place in the universe. I want students to feel welcome when they come to Book Club and Ally club.
We will use these books to identify with other cultures and see their likenesses as well as their differences.
