Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some amazing emergent bilinguals in Barrio Logan! All of my students are proud members of the Latino and Black community nearby. They are so full of laughter and joy that can make anyone's day instantly brighter. I'm so lucky to have such an amazing group of kindergarteners who have taken the challenge of this pandemic and have thrived regardless! Most of my students had never had gone to school before walking into my classroom this year. My students are resilient and I want to continue to give them the tools to succeed.

My Project

Our class strives to celebrate Black History Month, Black authors, Black characters, and of course our Black students. It is so important for all of our students to feel seen by the books read to their class.

Students feel empowered when there are people who look like them in our literature.

Recently in one of our reading assessments, my kindergartener was asked if she was similar or different to the character in the book. My student responded by saying the difference was that the character's skin was lighter.

My students deserve to see themselves joyous and thriving in literature and multicultural crayons.
