Celebrating Alaskan Literature

My students need 12 books about their Yupik culture.

Togiak, AK Grades 9-12

I teach students in an alternative program in our high school. The alternative program was started a year ago to assist students who have dropped out or who are at risk of dropping out.

Our high school has a high drop-out rate. Many of our students have failed because they lack a sense of pride about their own people, their own heritage, and their own culture.

The twelve books selected provide a variety of resources at different levels, all of which celebrate Yupik culture. Some of these are books writing by natives, others are books written by outsiders describing native culture.

Your support will assist these students in learning more about the stories of their own people. We are a generation away from losing these valuable stories.
