Help me give my students the picture books and CDs they need in order to learn about African American music.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Ramsey's classroom raised $600

My Students
I teach at an older, urban school where many of my wonderful first graders are the children of deployed military personnel. They attend school in one of the most multicultural districts in the United States.
This pandemic has been hard on my students and their families.
Almost all of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch; often, those free meals are the only food they have.
More than half of my students come from low-income homes but we are not a Title I school, and, as a result, we lack the resources and opportunities that many other schools have. My kids never go on field trips, to the movies or to live musical events.
Although many of my students are deemed at-risk, they are trying very hard to learn, and at the same time, they are learning how to navigate being in school for the first time!
My Project
I am requesting picture books and CDs my students need in order to learn about African American music. First grade is a very important year in the lives of students. They have so much to learn. They need to learn to basic math facts as well as how to read and write. They also need to learn about different cultures.
This year, my students will learning about different musicians as a way of expanding their appreciation of diversity.
We will be reading books about African American musicians and listening to their music. Unfortunately, our public library is too far away and school library lacks the books and materials we need.
In recent years, we have shifted heavily toward technology, common core subjects of reading and math, and forgotten about music and art in the classroom.
I am convinced that simple creative activities should be the basis of the rest of the curriculum. My school is not a Title I school, but we are a school that is economically disadvantaged and our budget is almost nonexistent. My students desperately need the books from this project to have an introduction to the world's diversity.
With the help of donors, my students will be able to learn about and celebrate African American music. We will also focus on acceptance and appreciation of everyone’s diverse backgrounds.
Our school has no money for this type of project. My students need your help. Please consider donating.
More than half of students from low‑income households
