My Students
I have an amazing group of students who love to read! Reading is a huge part of their lives! I have already shared my classroom library with them, and are they excited! I have never seen a group of students who would rather read than do other activities.
I also have a very diverse group of students who are reading at varying levels, from beginning readers all the way to college preparatory readers.
Needless to say, it is more essential this year than most years that they have at their immediate disposal to a vast library with books that span from beginning readers to proficient readers. I also know that they have a plethora of interests so I want to provide students with books to read at their leisure that vary in level as well as interest.
My Project
My objective as an educator is to make sure that all students are exposed to people from all walks of life and with varying perspectives. As we prepare for Women's History Month in March, I want to take the time to provide reading materials that are engaging, exciting, and that students can read regardless of their reading level. I also want more materials that are appropriate for read alouds!
Whenever I bring a new "Who was/Who is" book in my class, the crowd goes wild!
I never though a series of books could provide such joy in my class. And, in examining the books and the content, I find them to be historically accurate and a springboard for further study. Since my students are so enamored with these books, I have have decided to add them to my instructional program. Much of what my students do in class is research and inquiry. I want them to be able to not only address specific research questions, but to develop their own. I want them to be excited about next steps. However, in order to do that, the first step is critical. The first step must provide academic safety and freedom. The design of these materials provides that.
For this campaign, I have selected books about the complex lives of women. Both boys and girls need to be aware of the many contributions of the women in the books selected, and the "Who was/Who is" books provides access for all. I know that my students will be overjoyed to receive their books and to delve into the histories of amazing women who changed the world, and think of ways that they, too, can stand with these women and enact change.
