I teach kindergarten, first, and second grade reading students at a small rural Missouri school. My students are absolutely wonderful. They are intelligent, kind, and hard-working; however, they struggle with reading.
I try to do as many interactive, hands-on activities as possible to make reading easier.
I also try to spark an interest in reading by having my students read books that they will enjoy. If I can teach my students that reading is fun, my job of teaching the mechanics of reading is much easier.
My Project
At the beginning of each school year, I set an individualized reading goal for each of my students. This is a huge goal. It is achievable, but they must work extremely hard to meet this goal. Every week, my students read to me and we track their progress. When my students start getting close to meeting the goal, they become very excited and they can't wait to read with me again so they can see how much they have improved. When they do meet their goal, they are ecstatic.
Knowing that their hard work has paid off is extremely rewarding.
However, I would like to make meeting this goal even more exciting by rewarding my students with a book of their choice to take home. I believe meeting a huge goal deserves a huge celebration!
