Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We take a weekly spelling test, reading test, math test as well as a fluency passage. When a student achieves a passing score, or makes a significant gain, I would like to be able to reward their success and give them a certificate to celebrate their success and give an incentive to work towards.
I teach 18 first grade students at a Title I school.
Over 90% of our student population qualify for free and reduced lunch. We are a high-needs school in a state that has drastically reduced the education budget. Due to the budget cuts our school has very limited resources available to our students.
My Project
Incentives are a good way to push students to go that extra mile. My goal this year is to provide less candy incentives. Research says that it is important that students are not given unhealthy food for rewards because it can interfere with natural hunger cues and teach them to preference sweets. I would like to give more certificates to show the students that they can receive other incentives besides candy for their hard work. I will use the one hole punches to punch holes in their incentive cards. Any positive motivation at school can be a huge key in their success as students. By tracking the student's individual progress, they can take ownership of their success.

It has helped to boost their self-esteem and motivated those students who haven't been working at home to begin to show improvement. Your donation will allow me to continue to reward their successes and make it possible to celebrate education.
