Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in a culturally rich and diverse area in South Philadelphia. Our student body is over 55% English Language Learners (ELLS), encompassing over 20 different languages within our school walls. Because of this, our motto at our school is "Diversity is our Strength."

We strive to celebrate everyone's unique experiences.

At our school, we host many celebrations to honor all of the amazing cultures of our students. Many of our families are first generation immigrants or refugees coming to Philadelphia for a second chance at making a home here. Our school is not a place to be ashamed of your differences, but a place to recognize and honor them, and we do so in every way possible!

My Project

Read Across America Day is held every year during the first week of March to celebrate the love of reading in young readers across the country! This year, we are celebrating in the classroom by inviting community members to join us at our school as guest readers. As our students are from diverse areas of the world, we would love our guest readers to tell stories from voices around the world as well. Having books act as mirrors into our students' lives is a great way for them to be proud of their heritage and their culture.

We would like for our guest readers to read books from many different walks of lives, written and illustrated by individuals who share similar experiences as our students.

The National Education Association (NEA) provides a Read Across America list of books which represent an array of experiences and cultures. Guest readers will be able to choose a book to read to our impressionable young readers and the books will also be available in our school library for students and teachers to check out whenever they like. Help us spread the love of reading to all children!
