There are 67 English Learners at my school. We are a diverse group that not only speaks English but also 12 other languages. The 3 most spoken languages other than English are Russian, Chinese and Spanish.
I want my students to feel proud that they can communicate in more than one language.
It is both a gift and an asset to speak more than one language. This ability gives them a wonderfully, unique perspective of learning and the world around them.
It is my desire to gather resources that represent all the languages that my students speak. For this project I have chosen dual language books in Russian, Urdu, Punjabi and Korean.
These books would be used and enjoyed by students and parents as they are read at home.
Reading together builds not only comprehension and reading skills but relationships as well. When a child sees books in their first language, it sends a message that their first language is valued and plays an important role in learning. I want all of my students' language abilities to be recognized and valued.
