Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Spanish teacher at a Title I elementary school in SC. We have about 85% of students free/reduced. The population is mostly Hispanic, African/American and Caucasian. About 325 students will benefit from this experience. Most of my students will not have the opportunity to visit other countries until they are adults. This will also give my international students a sense of pride when we study their culture. This is the next best thing to being there!
Culture is one of the most important aspects of teaching language. When I teach Spanish to my children here at school I want them to receive the full experience. It also helps to link the cultures to each other. Who knew that a child in El Salvador also reads the same comic books that Derrick reads in SC? The only difference is that they are in Spanish. The other reason I teach about culture is that it helps my non-Spanish speaking students appreciate the language and traditions of my Spanish speaking students. It bridges the gap, so to speak.
The majority of the information requested in this proposal has to do with games. My students love to play games! They do not realize how much they have learned until we review the units. Games can help to teach the variety of learners in my group. My Hispanic students usually assume a leadership role while playing games. It gives some of them the opportunity to help others in class where traditionally (my LEP - Limited English Proficiency) they have been those seeking help. These items will provide years of use for all of my Spanish classes.
