In my classroom, we celebrate and learn understanding and acceptance of others through lessons based on Mexican holidays. Beginning in the fall with the Day of the Dead, progressing to the winter with Navidad and moving into the spring with Cinco de Mayo, students will study the cultural celebrations, history and language of Mexico in their elementary Spanish class. Through books, music, activities and displays, students will become familiar and comfortable with another culture. Our inner city public school serves about 650 students. All students beginning in Pre-K and continuing through Grade 6 receive Spanish instruction. Classes include many types of learners. Integrated special education students and self-contained special needs classes receive weekly Spanish instruction. Books, compact discs and activities geared to the elementary student will be needed for this project. All materials will be specific to one of the three celebrations and will offer the children a wide variety of learning experiences. Approximately 650 students, our entire school, will participate in some aspect of this project. Through the study of Mexican celebrations, students will learn about history, language and cultural celebrations. They will be encouraged to celebrate our differences.
