Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Dr. Seuss wrote, "The more that you read, the more things you will know." Studies show what common sense tells us: the more kids read, the better they read, and the more pleasure they get out of reading.
Unfortunately, the reverse also holds true: children who read very little usually have poor reading skills.
Reading is a struggle for them, and they avoid it whenever possible. Motivating children to read is one of those agony-ecstasy tasks every parent and teacher faces sooner or later. When the desire to read is planted, nurtured, and able to grow, then it is ecstasy; but when an appreciation of reading fails to take root, then it becomes agony. Kids will learn reading skills in school, but often they come to associate reading with work, not pleasure. As a result, they lose their desire to read. And it is that desire, the curiosity and interest; that is the cornerstone to using reading and related skills successfully.
My Project
My kindergarten students need read-along books and headphones to engage in read along experiences and help them to become budding readers. These resources will bring learning to life in our classroom. My students will be more engaged in their literacy activities instead of being told to "just practice reading." My students learn best when physically engaged in a "hands-on" activity. Hearing a book read on tape will help my kindergarten students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It will also help them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provide a model of fluent reading.
Your support will give my students a chance to become better readers, and enjoy what they are reading.
Some students do not have difficulties developing reading skills, but for the many students who do, these read-along books will give them more opportunities to become successful readers. They are so enthusiastic when learning is interactive and hands-on. The read-along books I have chosen will help motivate my students to become budding readers.
