Help me give my students a place to read! We need to increase the volume of our reading area where students interact with the science curriculum by reading textual information in the content area.
PJHS Cats are above the national average despite being in the lowest funded county in Alabama. Prattville Junior High School is the largest traditional junior high school in the state of Alabama and is home to over 1,000 7th and 8th graders. Our student population is predominantly middle-to-low income families with 30% minority students. With our school's close proximity to Maxwell Air Force Base, we have a notable amount of military families in our community and school. Also, due to the location of Hyundai Motors Manufacturing Plant and Maxwell Air Force Base's Air War College, we have many international students.
My students are excelling in a pre-AP Science course.
They need your help to turn our traditional school into an innovative, well equipped, inspiring space for learning!
My Project
I am pushing our students to become readers in the content area of Science. Students become very familiar with fiction in the younger grades. However, my challenge is to encourage junior high students to become proficient in reading informational text in Physical Science. A reading nook encourages them to engage in this type of reading. Furthermore, the couch seating allows students to collaborate about the reading. The opportunity for our Cats to get cozy on a couch while they read offers positive behavior support. Students respond well to flexible seating when tackling the challenge of reading Chemistry content. Help us create positive experiences!
