Catfish and Alligators and Starfish, Oh My! Chapter 2!
My students need access to the engaging science lessons that these books will bring to life, such as learning about habitats with "Catfish Kate" or pondlife in "Tadpoles Promise".
I am a teacher in a Title I school where over 75% of our students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunches. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, such as single parent homes and unemployment or underemployment of parents. These circumstances prevent them from having the diverse experiences that their peers in other not so rural areas may have.
Many of my students are confined to our beautiful little corner of the earth, but have no hope of visiting the far away places or experiencing the adventures that are depicted in many of these books.
My students are bright and eager to learn about and explore the world around them, but many will not be able to enjoy the "typical" life experiences of other children their age because of their socioeconomic status. I do the best that I can to provide them with engaging learning activities, but with declining budgets and out of date resources it is becoming more difficult to do.
These children are our future and I don't want their circumstances to define who they are and what they are capable of accomplishing.
My Project
I am working hard trying to build a library of quality literature to enhance my environmental science lessons with. I have learned to use beautiful picture books to bring the world around us to life in my classroom.
From swimming in swamp lands with Catfish Kate to exploring a day in the life of a starfish, my students will be able to continue their explorations of far away places!
They will learn about biomes and habitats, caterpillars and butterflys, then on to alligators and tadpoles. By hearing and reading the poems in "Song of the Water Boatman", they will learn about ponds and the vast array of life that they support.
