Caterpillar Curriculum for 1st Grade Butterfly Metamorphosis
The cost of this proposal for two Butterfly Pavilion School Kits is $150, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I teach first grade in a Brooklyn school (90% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch). I love conveying my excitement about science to my students, and my students are a wonderful group of young learners.
As a part of our curriculum we explore the life cycle of animals. This year we began a science unit called Caterpillar to Butterfly. This unit involves teaching students about the complex life of a caterpillar, through metamorphosis, when it turns into a butterfly. But it would be better if they could also witness the miracle of metamorphosis for themselves, and so I am asking for funding to purchase two Butterfly Pavillion School kits to make the experience of an observable science experiment a reality for my students.
With what the kits provide, we will be able to ask each student to observe their own caterpillar daily. Thus they will learn how to use and develop their senses as scientists. They will learn about various caterpillar and butterfly body parts and their functions, and the students will directly observe how the insect changes through the process of metamorphosis. We plan to expand our study to include butterfly wing symmetry and patterning and look at the caterpillar and butterfly in poetry and stories.
Additionally, although metamorphosis is understood as a concept, many of our students' parents have expressed excitement about our upcoming study because they, too, have never seen for themselves a caterpillar metamorphose into a butterfly. This unit would not only allow first graders to observe the amazing life cycle of this fascinating creature, but it would also invite them to include their families in their classroom experience.
The culminating event of our study will be the release of the butterflies in our public park and the reading of a special butterfly poem we enjoy.
To make this experience possible, we will need to purchase caterpillars for 50 students in the first grade and two butterfly nets for the chrysalises to grow in.
As a teacher, I have enjoyed opening my students' eyes to the world around them. This wonderful event in nature should be witnessed at least once by everyone. Who knows where it could lead my students in the future? This is something they will remember for a lifetime.
Thank you.
