Catching the Waves- A Science Investigation

My students need tuning forks, slinkies, and other materials for hands-on experiences to learn about waves. These materials will help teach the concepts behind how waves travel and how we use waves to learn about the world.

My Students

Students at my school have chosen our hands-on education and small class sizes to prepare for a career in one of our current pathways, first responders, industrial fabrication, or culinary arts. These high school students will earn industry certifications and participate in job shadowing and internships during their time at be.tech. Many will opt for entrepreneurial classes and learn how small businesses run. Some students will opt for college, others for the military, and some for a career immediately upon graduation. They represent a variety socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

My Project

Waves affect each of us everyday--from coastal good times to commonplace sights and sounds. Bringing materials like tuning forks and slinkies into the classroom will help students visualize what is really happening and help them make sense of their world. Concepts mastered here while learning about how sound and light travel through air, water and other mediums can also be applied to other waves and help students contextualize how microwaves and ultrasound work, and how light travels through outer space, and how we know what gases other atmospheres are comprised of. These materials are a great starting point for a wave study, and my students would certainly appreciate your generosity.
