This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Have you ever sat in a classroom too bored to participate? I am the math specialist at an inner city public school in Illinois, and unfortunately this is a scene I see far too often. Last year my school was able to raise our Math ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test) scores about 10 percentage points. Considering we cater to a small community with very little parent involvement and a small budget that does not allow for many extra programs, that is a tremendous gain! We did this by using a lot of direct instruction. If we want to continue moving forward, we need to start getting creative.
Everyday I walk into classrooms where students take notes on a new topic, do some practice problems on their own, and then get ready for homework problems. They may understand the topic that day, but there is very little retention. I attribute this to the lack of motivation to study and practice these important topics. I would like to put high energy games in each classroom for students to practice the basic math topics in a fun and interesting way.
I am asking for a class set of the game "24", various "Quizmo" games, and "Clever Catch" balls that cover a variety of topics. By having these high energy and high interest games, students can "play" for hours without even realizing they are practicing their math skills.
With your help, I can bring excitement and energy into the math classroom. No longer will students hate reviewing old skills, they will look forward to playing high energy games. With these supplies I know we can continue to raise our math scores, but more importantly help our students retain their math knowledge.
