Mrs. McKinney from Tallahassee FL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a set of leveled read along books and a listening center to increase reading fluency and comprehension.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Reading is not enjoyed by many of my students. It would be great for the students to finally see the magic through reading this year. Catch the Magic! is the phrase my group of third graders are expressing during reading.
There are 19 students in my third grade class.
Of those 19, over half of the students have been determined to be Developmental Delayed (DD) in reading. These student have yet to Catch the Magic! through reading. It is difficult for them to be transformed from one place to another through reading. These DD students are currently reading at two or more grade levels behind their peers. This school is labeled a Title 1 school and if these students are not given an opportunity to improve their reading skills, they are at a greater risk of falling further behind and there is a greater risk of them dropping out of school. There is a lack of parental involvement here, therefore, the students need encouragement through as many avenues as possible.
The items listed will provide the DD students with access to a CD listening center and reading books. Students will be able to see the story reading books as it is read to them in a human-like voice. The DD students will learn how to follow along to hear the proper speed for reading words. While reading along in the book, allows the DD students to better comprehend what is read and increases their attention span for reading. The goal is once they master these skills, they will be able to Catch the Magic! of reading.
These DD students are currently reading at two or more grade levels behind their peers.
The objective of the Catch the Magic! program is to help my DD students improve their reading speed, comprehension, increase their reading attention span, and then develop the reading skills that will prepare them not only for this grade level, but for high school and possibly post secondary education.
