Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work at PS 20, The Christy J. Cugini Port Richmond School. PS 20 is a Title I school with a largely Hispanic population comprised of a large percentage of new Mexican immigrants. I am a Reading Coach and service early childhood classes. In an effort to build reading fluency in our students, we are engaged in several initiatives to encourage reading at home, one of which is "Catch the Fever" (the reading fever). Classroom libraries are well stocked and other grants have put books into the hands of children, so we are well on our way. In Kindergarten and Grade 1 classrooms, there is an abundance of many beautiful picture books that are untouched. I would like for each child in our 3 Kindergarten and 3 First grade classes (about 180 students) to bring home a special book each night to read, look at, share with a family member and enjoy. I would like to make this very special for them by creating a special "bag". Each day a student can go home with a "book-in-a-bag." The "book-in-a-bag" will allow children to select a book that appeals them and give them the opportunity to enhance their love of reading, to improve family literacy and to improve fluency. Many of our children do not own books and do not have literacy-rich homes. The only materials needed for this project would be canvas tote bags and fabric paint to decorate the bags. This project will help instill a love of reading in our children and help them understand how special books are. It will also enhance several already-existing programs. Our students need to have as many good experiences with books as possible. Many of the students are from immigrant homes that are illiterate in English as well as their native language. We want to provide them with as many opportunities to love books as possible!! I think this would be a great incentive!
