Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Christopher School has been a PeaceBuilder School since 2001. This means that our students pledge daily to:
Praise People
Give up Put-downs
Seek Wise People
Notice hurts; right wrongs
We have the best kids here at our school. Anyone who comes on campus notices what a wonderfully peaceful school environment we've created. Even when our students visit places outside of school, people marvel at how sweet they are.
Our students come from a mixed socioeconomic neighborhood. Seventy-seven percent are Latino, 57% are English Language Learners, and 79% are on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
In spite of these potential obstacles, they work very hard to get along, stay on task, and respect each other. As I mentioned before, most are very, very sweet.
Now comes the hard part ... as in any school, we have a handful of very hard cases. We have the most patient and loving staff here at Christopher. We do all that we can, often on our personal time using personal resources. Sometimes no matter what we try to do we can't reach these few angry, fearful, and troubled children.
I have a great proposal that I know works because the Principal and I have already tried it. We've taken these lost little ones and asked them to help out with multi-media projects i.e. assemblies, school newspaper, special events here at school.
We've trained them to set up and run the sound system. We've worked on power point presentations with them. They love it! It helps them focus and learn new skills. They are responsible to teach others these new skills. Having this responsibility makes them accountable for something and so they love coming to school.
As I say in my title, I'd like to catch 'em doing digital! I can see these Jr. Journalists working a digital camera for the school paper, doing a power point presentation, and then setting it up to present to the entire school.
My idea is to start a multi-media club. We are currently using borrowed equipment that some staff members allow us to use. We really need our own equipment.
We need a laptop computer, a multi-media projector, a DVD player, and a digital camera. Please, please help me hold on to these sweet kids by CATCHING 'EM DOING DIGITAL!
Thank you in advanced for your heartfelt gifts.
