I teach first grade at a low income school. The children come from many different ethnic backgrounds. Over half of the school is on free lunch. Teaching money facts is not currently a first grade objective. However, in second grade the students have to learn enough about money to make change up to $1. I have decided to teach money to first graders, to give them a better chance at achieving their goals in second grade. I currently have no hands-on manipulatives to teach money. I would love for the students to have play money and a cash register to use in our math unit. This would help them identify the coins and bills. It would help them to practice addition and subtraction. It would also allow students some dramatic play as this cash register and money would be available to the students during centers as well as our planned activities playing "Toy Store" (The students cut toys from magazines and put pretend prices on them. Other students 'buy' the toys.) and "Restaurant" (Each student makes up their own restaurant with a menu and 'serves' the customer.) Thank you for your consideration.
