My students need a class set (35) of biographies about George Washington Carver to help them see what can be accomplished by a creative mind coupled with great education.
George Washington Carver is the exact kind of role model that I want our students to emulate as they go forward in their education. They have already dedicated themselves to climbing the mountain to college, so I want them to see the IMPACT that a scientific mind can have on the world!
Ten hour days and piles of homework are nothing to our students, because they have already decided that they are not going to let their circumstance decide their fate.
With these kinds of characteristics, it is easy to see how our KIPPsters are uniquely positioned to make an amazing impact on the world. In my class we learn how to debate while studying science and social studies so that our students learn the importance of turning their education into action.
My Project
With a set of biographies about George Washington Carver, my class can see the roots of the Civil Rights Movement taking hold during a time when it was lethally dangerous to stand up for what was right and to be highly educated. Again, if our students can learn about role models like George Washington Carver, they will see how important it is to take what they learn and turn it into positive innovation. They will not only read about a great leader and scientist, but use his experience to plot their own course for being a part of the future of the civil rights movement.
