My Students

Our school community serves a diverse group of students with a variety of ethnic, socioeconomic, and behavioral needs.

Because of COVID-19 my second graders missed over a year of in-person instruction.

The school was closed beginning in March of 2020, and many of students did not return for in-person instruction last year, opting to learn remotely. Unfortunately, remote instruction is not ideal for students who struggle to learn. Many of my students came from a home where both parents were working and didn't understand how to help their child complete assignments online. We as teachers struggled to teach at school and online at the same time.

Now that students are back in class, I want to make school exciting. They can learn coding skills by using a Botley 2.0 robot. I want them to work in cooperative groups while expanding their ability to problem solve utilizing coding.

Thank you for your consideration!

My Project

By bringing coding projects into my classroom my students will learn skills through cooperative learning and problem based activities.

Since many of our students were on distance learning for half of their kindergarten year and most of first grade, many are socially immature and lack the stamina to focus and finish projects as well as my previous second grade groups.

Working cooperatively will help build the skills they are lacking.

We will first discuss how cooperative learning works by setting group goals, using group processing, sharing, taking turns, and giving positive comments to others.

Groups will investigate the pieces of the Botley activity, read directions together, discuss how to order their process, and correct mistakes as needed.

The Botley activities promote critical, logical thinking skills as students learn to use coding to navigate obstacles, follow paths, and use commands.
